Turnpike bridge of the future

Valley News Dispatch

"For questions or comments on the Allegheny River Bridge project, call the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission's Western Regional Office in New Stanton at 724-755-5000.
The public had a chance to question Pennsylvania Turnpike officials about the upcoming project to replace the Allegheny River Bridge, and some people wanted to know whether there were any plans to create a link between the Turnpike and Route 28 in Harmar.

The approximately $125 million bridge replacement project is expected to start in late next year or early 2007 and should be finished in 2009. The replacement, which actually will be two bridges with an 8-foot gap between, will be built alongside the existing bridge that spans the river between Harmar and Oakmont. Ultimately, the project will bring three lanes in each direction for a two-mile stretch, Turnpike spokesman Joseph Agnello said at Thursday night's meeting.

Agnello said there are no plans to create a link between the Route 28 expressway and the Turnpike, and there are a lot of parties that need to be involved for the project even to be considered.

"They're spending all that money and they're not going to create an interchange with Route 28," said David Capone of Springdale Township. "They're going to have to someday like they did with the Cranberry Connector."

"That interchange belongs on the expressway," said Cheswick Councilman Dominick Pizoli Jr.

A project to create a new interchange would need to be backed by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, which makes projects eligible for federal funding, Agnello said. PennDOT and the commission also have to agree on creating the link, he said.

Agnello said support from the state Legislature couldn't hurt either."
