More troopers, safer drivers will cut truck crashes

"THE WRECK THAT killed four people on a hayride in Marion County (SC) late last month should serve as a wake-up call to the danger of big rigs to the public.

As The State’s Rick Brundrett reported, crashes involving big rigs and other commercial vehicles have increased four times as fast as wrecks involving private vehicles since 2001. And crashes have gone up six times as fast as the increase in the number of commercial vehicles on the road.

But while the state clearly is not doing enough to enforce highway safety laws, the problem with tractor-trailers isn’t what it first appears to be. Nor, we believe, are the solutions.

The state trucking association notes that big-rig wrecks have jumped just 17 percent in recent years — a pretty big deal, but only about twice as fast as wrecks involving private vehicles."
